Father’s Day is\u00a0celebrated to honor our fathers for everything they do for us through out their\u00a0life. In 2008, Father\u2019s Day will be celebrated on Sunday June 15th tomorrow. Father’s Day is celebrated on a variety of dates worldwide and\u00a0typically involves gift-giving to fathers and family-oriented activities.
\n<\/span><\/p>\n

Father’s Day in <\/span>Taiwan<\/span> is not an official\u00a0holiday but is widely observed on August 8 which is the eighth day of the eighth\u00a0month of the year. In Mandarin Chinese, the pronunciation of the number 8 is b\u0101.\u00a0This pronunciation is very similar to the character “<\/span>\u7238<\/span>” “b\u00e0”, which means\u00a0“Papa” or “father”. Taiwanese, therefore, usually call August 8 in its nick name\u00a0as “B\u0101b\u0101 Day” (<\/span>\u516b\u516b\u7bc0<\/span>). And in <\/span>China<\/span>, Father’s Day on\u00a0August 8 was first held in <\/span>Shanghai<\/span> in 1945 before\u00a0liberation.<\/span><\/p>\n

In the <\/span>United States<\/span>, the first person who suggested\u00a0establishing Father\u2019s Day is Mrs. Sonora Smart Dodd, born in <\/span>Creston<\/span>, <\/span>Washington<\/span>. Her father, the Civil\u00a0War veteran William Jackson Smart, as a single parent reared his six children in <\/span>Spokane<\/span>, <\/span>Washington<\/span>. She was inspired by\u00a0Anna Jarvis’s efforts to establish Mother’s Day. Although she initially
\nsuggested June 5, the anniversary of her father’s death, she did not provide the\u00a0organizers with enough time to make arrangements, and the celebration was\u00a0deferred to the third Sunday of June. The first June Father’s Day was celebrated\u00a0on <\/span>June 19,\u00a01910<\/span>, in <\/span>Spokane<\/span>, <\/span>WA<\/span>. In 1966, President\u00a0Lyndon Johnson made Father’s Day a holiday to be celebrated on the third Sunday\u00a0of June. So we also celebrate it on the third Sunday of\u00a0June.<\/span><\/p>\n
